Chronology

Hu Chi Chung Fifth Moon Group Oil painting

Born January 27 in Song Yan Cun village, Zhejiang

Province,  China.          

            

Runs away from home.


Is able to enroll in the Republic of China Whampoa 

Military Academy by overstating his age.


Discharged from the academy for being underage.

Transfers to a high school provided for refugee youth,

and later joins another military unit.


Returns home for the first time after China’s victory over

Japan, but stays only for a short time due to increasing         

tensions between the Nationalists and the Communist

parties. Moves to Shanghai and joins the Republic of

China Marine Corps ( Nationalist party ).


Relocates to Taiwan with the Nationalist Kuomingtang

government after the Communists seize power.


Begins to paint.


Participates in the 1st Armed Forces Art Exhibition in

Taipei, Taiwan. Awarded first prize for oil painting.


Travels to the USA and represents the Republic of          

China at the 1954 International Pistol Championship,

Parris Island Marine Base, South Carolina.

              

Visits the De Young Museum in San Francisco,

California. Inspired by modern art and French

impressionest Pierre-Auguste Renoir.


1st one-man oil painting exhibition in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.


Establishes “Four Seas Artists Association” with fellow

artist Fong Chung Ray.


Starts using sand in his paintings.


Selected to show at the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville

de Paris in Paris, France.

Selected for the 5th Bienal de Sao Paolo at the Museu de

Art Moderna in Sao Paolo, Brazil.  Also participated in 1961,

1963, and 1967.


Joins the Fifth Moon Group ( 五月畫會 ).


Marries Jena Yu-Gi Liu.


Son Daniel Tien-Yu Hu is born.


Son Jerry Tien-I Hu is born.


Retires from the Republic of China Marine Corps with the rank

of captain.


Selected to show at The Pittsburgh International Exhibition of

Contemporary Painting and Sculpture at The Carnegie Institute,

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.


Selected to show at  A Now Current Show at the Smithsonian

Museum in Washington D.C.

              

               




                                                                         




















Awarded the Golden Classical Cup Prize of 1968 by the Art

Society of China, Taipei, Taiwan.


Immigrates to the USA with his family. Moves to San Francisco,

California.


Starts exploring with different subject matter in his paintings.


Has first One-man show at Zantman Art Galleries in Carmel,

California, and later in Palm Desert, California. Solo exhibitions

almost every year for the next 25 years.


Moves and buys a house in Carmel, California.


Starts showing at Naples Art Galleries in Naples, Florida.


China opens its doors. Returns home and visits Song Yan Cun

for the first time in more than 30 years.

                

Widowed.


Has a major retrospective exhibition at the National Museum of 

History in Taipei, Taiwan.           


Diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Painting becomes difficult.


Moves to Southern California to be close to his sons.
